On the tree-lined streets of Cobble Hill you will see kids walking to school with their parents, young professionals walking their dogs, Yoga students sipping green tea, and neighborhood elders holding court on the sidewalk, greeting friends and strangers alike. This is a laid back land of historic homes. Elegant parlor floors, spacious gardens, original details like marble fireplaces, and polished wood stairways abound. For the architecturally minded, we should note that much of Cobble Hill is a historic district known for its Italianate-style brownstone and brick row houses. The area is served by three public schools, including PS29, serving grade Pre-K through 5 and which has one of the best extracurricular programs in the city. PS29 has proven itself very successful in developing a strong multicultural community. For older youth, Brooklyn School for Global Studies and School for International Studies are housed together on Court Street and serve grades 6 through 12.

Shopping in Cobble Hill is never dull. Trader Joe's, on the corner of Court St. and Atlantic Ave., Key Food down the street, and a neighborhood Met Food on Henry and Degraw St. serve everyone's daily needs. Court Street offers the gourmet Union Market, and Italian bakeries serve gelato on hot summer days. G. Esposito and Son is the place for traditional Italian specialties like soppresata and parmigiana. If you’re in the mood for top-drawer steaks, Staubitz, on Court St., in business since 1917, offers organic, free-range and grass-fed meats. For Middle Eastern delicacies, there is no place like Sahadis, on Atlantic Ave. Do not forget to check out their prepared foods!

A Saturday afternoon a stroll through Cobble Hill Park reveals the heart and soul of this part of Brooklyn. People of all ages sit reading, sipping coffee, and nibbling amazing muffins from Ted and Honey, the bright red deli next door. Roses may be blooming in the center garden and kids are giggling and shouting in the playground. Neighborly greetings are exchanged, impromptu conversations often follow and checkers are set up next to iPads. This is truly a welcoming community with an easy comfortable style.
