Neighborhood Guide

Bay Ridge

Bay Ridge is one of the few residential waterfront neighborhoods in Brooklyn, and it offers sweeping views of the Verrazano Narrows from many parks and residences. When Bay Ridge was first settled by Dutch colonists, it was given the name Yellow Hook because of the color of the soil; however, a serious outbreak of Yellow Fever in the mid-eighteen hundreds caused the name to be changed because of the negative irony. Bay Ridge was chosen as the new name for the area because of the views of the New York Bay that can be seen from the area’s coastal ridgeline, which is now Ridge Boulevard. Bay Ridge is bounded by Sunset Park on the north, Seventh Avenue and Dyker Heights on the east, The Verrazano Narrows Strait on the west, and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge on the south.

Public elementary schooling in Bay Ridge is provided by P.S. 102, P.S. 170, P.S. 185, and P.S. 104. Private school options for Bay Ridge include Bay Ridge Preparatory School and Poly Prep Country Day School, both of which have a lower and upper school.

Bay Ridge boasts a sparkling coastline and waterfront recreation, including boating and fishing, as well as bicycle and walking paths with stunning views of passing ships and of the bridge. Historic red-brick apartment buildings with perfectly maintained lawns line Shore Road along with millionaires’ mansions dating from the mid-nineteenth century. Owl’s Head Park, also called Bliss Park, provides locals with twenty-seven acres of walking trails, a skate park, playground, and basketball courts.

Bay Ridge has attracted New York residents for over two centuries, providing an escape from the atmosphere of the metropolis but allowing easy transportation to and from Manhattan. With everything from small, residential blocks to large streets with restaurants and stores, Bay Ridge is an ideal place for the person seeking a quieter abode within the big city.
