Neighborhood Guide

Clinton Hill

Clinton Hill is a neighborhood in north-central Brooklyn with a rich architectural history that can be seen in its mixture of apartment buildings, mansions, townhouses, and collegiate institutions. Clinton Hill is bordered by the Navy Yard and the BQE to the north, Williamsburg to the northeast, Bedford–Stuyvesant to the east, Atlantic Avenue and Prospect Heights to the south, and Fort Greene to the west.

The land that comprises Clinton Hill was purchased by Dutch and French settlers from the Lenape during the mid-seventeenth century. During the American War for Independence, the area was a strategic point for British troop movements. After the war, the land continued to attract new settlers because the area’s naturally elevated position provides views of Manhattan and the East River. Clinton Hill has also played home to a number of famous Brooklynites, such as poet Walt Whitman, who for a time served as editor of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, and Charles Pratt, an oil executive who founded the Pratt Institute in Clinton Hill during the late-nineteenth century.

Clinton Hill is served by P.S. 11, P.S. 56, and P.S. 270, with all three schools enrolling students in grades Pre-K through 5. The area is also home to a number of charter schools and an academy, in addition to institutions of higher education.
